CGLO – Search Help

Overview

CGLO provides an interface for searching the Corpus Glossariorum Latinorum (CGL), specifically the lemmatized Thesaurus glossarum in volumes six and seven. The underlying data is available for download in the Git Repository. The scanned pages contain the marginalia and corrections of Wilhelm Heraeus in the exemplar kept in the TLL Library.

The contents of CGL and the short abbreviations used here are outlined here (Excel spreadsheet). Information about the minor textual divergences between CGLO and CGL are found in DIFFERENTIAE.docx.

⚠ The interface and data are still in beta. Errors remain in the data that will be eliminated over time, and greater functionality will be added. To report errors and provide feedback, please click “Submit corrections”. Your help is greatly appreciated!

How to Search

To search for a headword in any language, type the word or part of a word in the bar labeled “All columns” or “Lemma”. A headword is any text printed in bold in the Thesaurus glossarum. All relevant results will appear in the lemma list below.

In Latin headwords, “U” and “u” are used consistently for both the consonant (V/v) and the vowel (U/u). (The original distinction in CGL between upper-case U and V has been disregarded.)

To search for Greek, please omit all diacritics. E.g. typing “ωδη” will return “ᾠδή”.

Editorial deletions and corrections to the lemma indicated by square and angle brackets are disregarded in the search. E.g. “abiurare” will return “abiur[g]are” and “abligurrire” will return “abligur<r>ire”.

By default a “simple” search will search for the text in any part of a headword. Selecting “word start” will match the text only if it coincides with the beginning of the lemma, “word end” if it coincides with the end. By default the search is insensitive to case and to word order. To turn off case insensitivity, unclick the box marked “a=A”. To match a series of words only in the specified order, unclick the box “xy=yx”. To turn on regular expression searching, click the box labeled “*?”.

Individual columns can be searched separately. For instance, to search only in the Index Graeco-Latinus, in the search box “Lingua” type “Graecum” (or under “Select cell value” select “Graecum”). To see occurrences only in a specific glossary, such as Pseudo-Philoxenus, in the search box “Loca in glossariis” type “Ps.-Phil.”. To see occurrences on a specific page of CGL, type the volume and page, e.g. “II 543”.

How to Cite

To cite an entry from the Thesaurus glossarum, the following conventions are recommended:

CGL capitalizes the lemmata of all main entries (e.g. Abacus) to distinguish them from sub-lemmata (e.g. abaci), which are only capitalized when proper names. In the XML data every <form> tag receives a unique @id element that can be used for reference as long as the version is explicitly stated. The id element may vary from version to version.

Occurrences from individual glossaries in volumes II to V are typically cited by volume and line number according to the following format:
